Overall description of the principal’s role: The principal will almost always be in the school, but not necessarily in his/her office. The principal is responsible for overseeing day-to-day operations, problem-solving, coordinating the educational program and enforcing discipline. The principal is more like a school’s COO – chief operating officer.
Clarifying Notes:
Question: What’s the difference between the duties/responsibilities of a Head of School and a principal?
Quick Answer: The Head of School’s focus is outward and the principal’s focus is inward. The HOS focus should be on promoting the mission of the school – including fundraising, admissions, strategic planning, budget, compliance, facilities and building projects. The principal’s focus should be on implementing the school’s mission – including overseeing and guiding the school’s day to day operations in the areas of curriculum, scheduling, discipline, technology, and teacher mentoring and evaluation.
