ענין של סיפור
A collection of Hebrew Reading Comprehension Units

A skill-based, text-driven Hebrew language curriculum designed to build comprehension, fluency, and higher-order thinking through carefully selected texts and intentional, scaffolded practice.

This innovative curriculum invites students into the world of Hebrew language through a wide range of meaningful and relevant texts, each paired with structured activities designed to strengthen both foundational and advanced language skills. Students engage with Hebrew in ways that build confidence, accuracy, and deeper textual insight, empowering them to become independent and thoughtful readers.

Built around a three-tiered progression: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced, this curriculum supports growth across a range of ages and levels. Schools are encouraged to assign levels based on student proficiency rather than grade alone. As students move through the levels, texts become more complex, and skill demands increase, with later units requiring the integration and application of previously mastered abilities.

Each unit introduces and reinforces essential Hebrew language Skills such as:

  • Identifying opposites (הפכים)
  • Guessing the meaning of unfamiliar words using context clues
  • Sequencing events and ideas
  • Recognizing root words (שורשים), prefixes, and suffixes
  • Understanding cause and effect within a text
  • Making inferences and drawing conclusions
  • Comparing and contrasting ideas or characters
  • Answering both literal and interpretive questionsand many more.

Each Hebrew text in the curriculum is presented in two complementary formats:

  1. Open-Ended Format – This version of the text is followed by reflective, open-ended questions designed to elicit full-sentence responses and encourage elaboration, interpretation, and critical thinking.
  2. Multiple-Choice Format – The same text is presented again with multiple-choice comprehension questions, allowing for practice with close reading, attention to detail, and strategic thinking.

By working through two sets of exercises on the same text, students develop a fuller understanding of content and structure, while also practicing different forms of reading comprehension. The two formats cater to varied learning styles and help reinforce skills through repetition in diverse ways.

Inspired in part by the L’havin program’s emphasis on structured skill development, this curriculum provides clear, level-appropriate instruction in language comprehension that is both rigorous and engaging. Activities are thoughtfully sequenced to build on one another and encourage long-term mastery.

This curriculum is designed for versatile use in the classroom: whether as a core part of Ivrit instruction, a supplemental skills program, or integrated into guided reading and text-based learning blocks. With its focus on authentic texts, explicit skill-building, and dual-format comprehension practice, it provides educators with a powerful tool for helping students engage meaningfully with Hebrew and grow into confident, capable readers.
